We had a well attended and successful Focal Therapy in Prostate Cancer conference at the Royal College of Surgeons, London last week. It was great to see many of you there in addition to a significant number of enthusiastic colleagues from Europe and the USA.
There were some great presentations on the role of focal HIFU, cryotherapy, electroporation, PDT, brachytherapy, etc. In particular it was very obvious that the majority of prostate cancer surgeons across the globe wish to emulate the the world leading focal therapy programme that Mark Emberton has pioneered here at UCLH – in fact I must say that Mark and Peter Pinto from the National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, USA did a magnificent job of chairing the whole meeting.
We plan to hold another conference in the second half of next year. However, there will be a HIFU Users Group meeting at BAUS this year and I would encourage you all to attend as the field is developing rapidly.
As a final note I would like to mention that Tim Dudderidge in Southampton and Iqbal Shergill in Wrexham have started focal therapy programmes and are the most recent members of the NCRI approved Index lesion trial – I see both, as a result, had significant publicity in the media!!
